The Blacksmith Shop
The Blacksmith Shop, October 2023 - to be moved in the near future
Spocott always had a blacksmith shop. When John Anthony LeCompte Radcliffe and his ancestors built ships, buildings, and furniture, the lumber came from surrounding forests. The nails and fitting were manufactured on the property. The blacksmith shop was a hive of activities. Shoes for horses, cart hardware, and tools were in constant demand, and these were always made. Spocott was a completely self-sufficient community.
The current building being redesigned for a period blacksmith shop was the smokehouse that Adaline Wheatley used, which was originally located beside her kitchen in the Spocott yard. It contains the anvil from the original Spocott blacksmith shop, which collapsed years ago. Currently, it is going underwater with rising sea level and will be moved. At that time, one end will be opened to resemble a period blacksmith shop.
